Juvenile crime is a serious and growing problem in the United States. This problem that
dramatically peaked in the early 1990s generated great concern shared by the public, the local
government, and federal government officials. Since then, the problem appears to have declined,
the fears remain, and many state governments introduced harsher legislative actions against
juvenile crimes. Initially, the idea that juveniles were less culpable to commit crimes and more
amenable to rehabilitation than crime-committing adults has paved way for a harsher stance in
the past few decades.
Discussion
Many juveniles take advantage of the lenient juvenile court system to commit violent
crimes and offenses since they believe they will get it easy. Now juveniles are committing
violent crimes of unfathomable proportions, daily, youths under 18 years commit heinous crimes
ranging from murder, rape, violent robberies, and kidnappings, to mention just a few. To make it
worse, some juveniles go further and post and share such heinous crimes on social media sites
such as Facebook and Instagram. Therefore, a lingering question is why the juveniles who
commit such crimes accorded more lenient treatment while the crime committed is adult in
nature?

I believe juvenile offenders should be tried and subsequently punished as adults under
certain circumstances when it comes to violent offenses. Before the spike in juvenile crimes in
the 1990s, the United States relied on the juvenile court system, founded more than a century ago
to punish juvenile crimes. The Juvenile court system was based on the premise of providing
individualized rehabilitation to juvenile offenders for minor offenses such as vandalism,

shoplifting, and truancy. Many believed juveniles should be tried and punished based on their
youth rather than the crime committed. The central assumption of the system was treating the
