Established in 2008 by Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk, Airbnb,
short for "air bed and breakfast," is an American company based in San Francisco, California. It
is a digital marketplace for accommodation facilities for visitors on vacation or tourism
activities. All services of the company are accessible online via mobile app and website. The
company does not any of the listed accommodation facilities but mainly connects travelers with
people willing to rent their homes in the region for some income. The company, on the other
hand, earns profit from booking commissions. For the past decade since its inception, Airbnb has
attracted many customers as a digital platform where renters and hosts can mutually benefit
(Oskam & Boswijk, 2016). However, concerns have arisen over damage or theft of property, and
that renter might get lodgings not appealing to their needs.
Airbnb has created a sustainable competitive advantage over large hotel chains and bed
& Breakfast. The company has a distinct business model based on the commission charged on
booking listings by connecting travelers and hosts through a digital platform. Therefore, the
company does not have any brick-and-mortar property compared to other firms in the hotel
industry and does not incur any maintenance costs. In addition, Airbnb offers flexible and cheap
prices to renters, and hosts get an opportunity to earn profits.
