One stereoisomer of 1,1,3,5,-tetramethylcyclohexane is 15 kJ/mol less stable than the other. Which one more stable and why? Expalin.

There are two stereoisomers for 1,1,3,5,-tetramethylcyclohexane - cis and trans.

The cis stereoisomer is more stable than trans. It exists in conformation with only one axial methyl group, while the trans has two axial methyl groups in close contact with each other.

Thus, the trans stereoisomer is destabilized by van der Waals strain.
