Description

For this assignment, you will analyze and evaluate critically a movie or television show (single show or single movie) that examines interpersonal dynamics displayed in the movie.  Please cover at least two chapters. The movie is Titanic.

Do not pick any animated programs or movies or anything from science fiction.  This assignment works best on films that depict life in realistic ways.

Your paper should be no longer than 4-5 pages (one-inch margins and 10 or 12 pt. type), so be concise and get to the point.

Use correct citation style (either MLA or APA).

You’ll use citations to point to relevant concepts in the book or other course materials.  But most of your citations should come from your text.

Keep in mind that I’m not grading you on your description of the show, but rather your ability to analyze the show through the lens of what you have learned in class thus far.

In the introduction, briefly describe media artifact—very briefly.  Assume that I’m going to view it. Preview the relevant concepts that you’ll be covering and use those concepts to create an organizational structure for the paper.  Again, keep the concepts up front, not a description of the show.

McCornack; Steven. (2015). Reflect & Relate: An Introduction to Interpersonal Communication; 3rd ed. New York: Bedford/St. Martins

In the body of the paper, isolate the most significant course concepts that are on display in this show.  Describe the show just enough so I understand how the concept applies. Here are some things to think about to help guide you (but you are certainly not limited to these questions):

Is there something about the character’s appearance that prompts analysis?

Are the character’s behavior and relationships consistent with chapters on family, friendship, or romantic relationships?  If so, how so? If not, how not?

Consider the relationships between characters. Can you discuss the conflict style, self perception, interaction, self-disclosure, etc?

Consider the verbal styles on display and language used.  Is it consistent with what you learned in the text?

Consider the non-verbal elements (other than appearance).  Are they consistent with what you have learned in the text?

If someone were to arrive here from another culture, what would they assume about interpersonal relationships in our culture based upon what they have viewed in this program.

Interpersonal Communication
Introduction
Throughout history, communication has been instrumental in so many ways. Even in the
absence of language, communication was still taking place using other different forms.
Interpersonal communication as a study involves looking at the moral, personal, ethical,
emotional values, and cultural elements. With interpersonal communication, there are key
aspects to look at. These aspects are not usually covered while studying communication in
general, where we find areas such as public speaking, multicultural communications, and others.
Although these major branches are equally important and introspective, none of them touches on
relationships that develop among people. Titanic film contains various aspects that can help to
understand interpersonal communication. As much as the Titanic movie encompasses several
principles covered in the study of interpersonal communication, two theories happen to stand
out. These include Face Theory and Affection Exchange Theory.
Titanic movie is a Hollywood production grounded in a love story involving two
characters, Jack and Rose. Although fictional characters, the two comes out as the embodiment
of interpersonal communication as depicted by the dominant theme of the film, romance-disaster.
The movie is heavily built on literary styles such as flashbacks and narrator point of view from
an elderly survivor, Rose Dawson Calvet (McCornack; Steven, 2015). In the beginning, the
focus centers on an important media artifact, a drawing saved from previous excavation
activities. In the drawing, a young girl wearing a valuable piece of jewelry helps define different
settings that come into play in the building of the film's story. In the broader context, the use of

the girl replays the time setting that characterizes the age and appearance of then Rose Dawson,
who by the time of narration is old and weak. There is also a sense in which James Cameron
utilizes coincidence in the movie, perfectly contrasting the past and the present through greater
use of flashback storytelling. Also presenting the contrast is the variances in the socio-economic
as witnessed in the ship’s upper and lower decks, liberal values of the 20th era, as well as the
Victorian property’s stifling restrictions. Further, it is escalated through the basic instincts of
self-preservation and the triumph of the humanoid spirit that emerges when faced with adversity.
For the most part of the movie, James Cameron has kept his characters' associations at
the forefront throughout the film. For instance, we see this in the Ripley relationship in 'The
Aliens' and the reconciliation of Lindsey as presented in the 'An Abyss.' Nevertheless, it is quite
ironic that a young gentleman's propitious hand of poker places him in contention with thoughts
of a lady who seems to be resigned in her life journey and probably considers not to be alive
anymore. Intriguingly, all these unfold in a doomed journey.
In the movie, there is a depiction of a story of an iconic ship taking its maiden voyage
comprising more than 1500 men, children, and women of different nationalities and races. The
journey takes an unfortunate turn when the ship strikes an iceberg peeling off its frontal base,
possibly marking the sad beginning of the end of the journey. A majority on board perishes,
while a few are rescued. At least everyone can agree to the fact that James Cameron and his team
achieved...
