Philippians 2:9-11 has been the subject of many interpretations over the years, owing to
the significance of the verse in the story of the resurrection of Christ. This verse, according to the
King James Version of the Bible reads: “9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and
given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue
should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Bible, 2000) This
verse signifies the exaltation of Christ to a state above all beings on earth and heaven. In this
paper, I trace the different interpretations of this verse.

The history of the interpretations of the verse has more or less rally around the topic of
the exaltation of Christ, having been born of heavenly glory but lived a life of humility. Matthew
