Introduction
Police are responsible for maintaining public order and safety, enforcing the law,
detecting and investigating criminal activities. This activity refers to us as policing (Lundman,
1980). There has been tremendous change in the history of policing. The modern police force
commenced in the early 1990s, while its origins date back to the colonies. This text addresses
policing and its agencies, majoring on how it began, the events and developments that have taken
place.
PART 1
Robert Peel
Sir Robert Peel, the 2nd Baronet, was an English Conservative statesman who served
twice as a prime minister in the United States Kingdom and twice as a home secretary. Peel was
the founder of the Conservative Party. In 1846 he was responsible for the repeal of the Corn
Laws that had restricted imports. Peel believed that police needed to be restructured. Therefore,
he passed the Metropolitan Act in 1829. However, Peel is regarded as the father of Modern
British policing owing to his founding of the Metropolitan Police service. Robert Peel improved
prisons by advocating a system that aimed at preventing crimes and reforming criminals, rather
than focusing on punishments and deterrents. Peel is remembered for changing the penal code
whereby he reduced the number of crimes punishable by death by 100.
An event that occurred in the political Era of policing
During this Era, prohibition gave rise to organized crime, and this caused widespread
police corruption. From 1840-1930 in the United States, politicians appointed police officers as a
political reward (Potter, 2013). The politicians used police officers to maintain their power. In

the neighborhood they patrolled, the police represented the local politicians. There was no civil
service system; therefore, police were hired, fired, and managed at the discretion of the local
politicians. In my opinion, erecting police offers in favor of the politicians has resulted in todays'
corruption in the policing system.
Change in policing during the professional Era
Unlike in the political Era, the professional Era introduced various policing practices,
established professional police training, and protected academic institutions. Although there was
