Malcolm Gladwell, (2013) narrates the story of David and Goliath. This is a famous story
that is found in the Bible. Gladwell states that the story is used metaphorically to describe
instances where one has made it to win victories in life that seemed impossible to win.
From the story, the Israelites and the Philistines are in a conflict and agree the only way
to solve it is by producing a soldier from each side, and the two will challenge one another in a
duel. The winner on either of the sides represents the winning side. The Philistines produce a
giant. The Israelites soldiers are afraid of producing a soldier. David who is from grazing and has
been sent by his father to take food to his brothers in battle decides to take the challenge. He is
dressed in an armor but declines it due to its weight. David advances towards the battle square.
The giant speaks in mockery. He asks whether he is a dog to be beaten with sticks and stones.
David puts a stone in the sling and whirls the sling and then releases the stone that hits on the
forehead of the giant – Goliath. He fails and David picks his sword, slits his throat and separates
the body from the head.
