Four different primates are pictured here. Find the skeletal material for the baboon and the squirrel monkey on http://eskeletons.org/. Examine each specimen, taking notes as you go about the differences and similarities in the following areas of the skeleton for each specimen: overall size, the tail, the cranium, shape of the face (e.g., position of nostrils), the limbs, and the teeth. Species A: Baboon (Papio cynocephalus) Species B: Squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii) Species C: Tarsier (Tarsius bancanus borneanus) Species D: Gorilla (Gorilla beringei) 1. What do these morphological features suggest about the diet of these primate species? 2. What do these morphological features suggest about the locomotion of these species? 3. What do these morphological features suggest about their social structure?? In your discussion, include an overview on how skeletal anatomy can inform on the diet, locomotion, and social structure of primate species. How might we use this information to better understand our human evolutionary history?

Baboon Skeleton

From the above skeletons, the Papio Cynocephalus, also known as the baboon (No.P51),
has a larger skeletons size than the Saimiri Oerstedii, popularly known as the squirrel monkey. The
overall skeleton size difference is brought about by the large upper abdominal skeleton size of the
baboon, the skull, and the long lower limbs of the baboon compared to the squirrel monkey. On
the other hand, the squirrel monkey has long vertebrae compared to the baboon. As a result, the
squirrel monkey has a long spinal and a long tail than the baboon. Besides, the thoracic spine
covers a larger section of the baboon’s spine than the squirrel monkey. This makes the monkey’s
skeleton appear horizontally more prolonged than the baboon. Another difference is that the
baboon has a long and large skull than the Squirrel monkey, which has a pe...
