Understand & explain first-line treatment for the disease.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a chronic condition often associated with
frequent suicidal thoughts. In this case, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are the
first line of treatment used for PTSD. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves
sertraline and paroxetine for the treatment of PTSD (PMC, 2012). PTSD causes extreme
emotional reactions, thus making SSRI prescriptions an appropriate first line of treatment
because they act as antidepressants. As each patient responds differently, the medication should
be tailored to address their specific needs.
Understand & explain second-line treatment and why you would use second-line treatment.
In case the first line of treatment involving SSRIs seems ineffective, Serotonin and
Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) should be used as the second line of treatment.
norepinephrine plays a significant role during a flight or fight reaction (PMC, 2012). In the case
of intense stress, an individual may feel threatened, hence their norepinephrine levels increase. In
addition, norepinephrine helps in regulating sleep, memory, attention, and mood. Thus, people
with low concentrations of norepinephrine may reveal signs of depression. Thus, this second line
of treatment would be used for the patient with PTSD to regulate their mood, memory, attention,
and sleep, while reducing depression. The key difference between the first line and second line
of treatment is that the latter includes norepinephrine which helps in preventing intense stress.
