Drugs such as alcohol have profound impact on the functioning of various body organs as
discussed below.
Brain

Alcohol makes your neurotransmitters to convey information too slowly and this makes
you to fell sleepy. Disorders associated with alcohol to the neurotransmitter balance also can
cause mood and behavioral changes. Heavy drinking for a long period of time causes changes in
the neurons, such as brain cells to decrease in size (Vashist, et al, 2014). Due to these and other
changes, brain mass reduces and the brain’s inner cavity becomes bigger. These changes affect
wide range of abilities, such as motor coordination, temperature regulation, sleep, mood, and
various cognitive functions. Alcohol interferes with glutamate action, and this may be what
causes some people to temporarily black out, or forget much of what happened during a night of
heavy drinking.

Liver disease caused by alcohol can destroy the brain. The liver breaks down alcohol in the
body and its toxins. In this process, the by-products of the liver destroy liver cells. Therefore,
destroyed liver cells do not function as well as they should and permit these toxic substances,
particularly ammonia and manganese to travel to the brain. These substances continue to destroy
brain cells, causing a serious and possibly deadly brain disorder known as hepatic
encephalopathy which causes a range of complications, from less severe to fatal. They include
