Discussion 1 - Week 3 COLLAPSE Discussion 1: Paraphrasing Paraphrasing is at the center of scholarly writing. One of the habits that many undergraduate students develop when discussing information from references is to quote that information. As graduate students, you are expected to advance your academic writing style to rely on paraphrasing—or putting what you read into your own words; however, the ideas and information are still always cited. To prepare for this Discussion: Review the Study Notes: Introduction to Scholarly Writing: Finding a Scholarly Voice a nd the Writing Center webinar on paraphrasing. Identify a favorite song and locate the exact words of the song and its composer. With this information in mind: By Day 3, directly copy eight lines of lyrics from your song (choose lyrics that do not contain offensive language). Cite your information, including the composer. Explain why copying the lines of lyrics is not paraphrasing. Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings. Respond by Day 5 to at least two of your colleagues and continue the discussion through Day 7 by putting the meaning of those lyrics into your own words. Using the information that you have learned about paraphrasing, explain why this is an example of paraphrasing. Cite your information. Madame d’AulnoyExamine one of Madame d’Aulnoy’s Fairy Tales for evidence of any of the following: veiled criticisms of royalty, of enforced marriages (she was firmly of the belief that women should be allowed to turn down suitors); of sexual harassment (things do not go well for nearly anyone, male or female, who continues to press unwanted romantic and/or sexual attentions on other characters); of overly elaborate court fashions that, she claimed, were used only to conceal an underlying ugliness, and frequently failing at that; and of untrustworthy servants or that the only good, trustworthy peasants in her tales are royals or fairies in disguise.
