NDNQI and Nurses Script
In an infographic by Gallup (2017, as cited in McCarthy, 2018), 82% of Americans
reported that nurses are among those who have the highest ethical and honesty standards. Nurses
ranked first in that poll by Gallup regarding ethical and honesty standards in various professions,
and nurses topped that for the 16th year. With this kind of poll results, it is quite easy to see that
the public has high regard for the work of nurses, which also means that nursing quality is more
scrutinized. In the nursing profession itself, the quality of nursing practice is always checked in
order to keep up with the changing needs of the patients, as well as make sure that patient safety
is prioritized at all times. In the United States, the National Database of Nursing Quality
Indicators or NDNQI exists to measure nursing quality in healthcare settings. As a nurse who is
new to the environment, it is imperative that you understand what NDNQI is and its importance
in helping you achieve your institution’s goals in boosting patient outcomes.
So, what exactly is the NDNQI? The NDNQI is known as the national database that helps
healthcare facilities to make comparisons between their own institutions and others, down to the
level of their units. Institutions that sent their information to the database could compare their
own performances with organizations from other parts of the country. There are also a number of
international healthcare facilities that participated in the NDNQI in order to recognize and
prioritize which areas need to be improved to prevent the onset of adverse situations (Well and
Empowered LLC, 2021). The evaluation of nursing practice quality began even during the time
of Florence Nightingale when she recognized the importance of nursing in health care quality. It
was during her time that she started measuring patient outcomes. The American Nurses
Association established the NDNQI so that ANA could continuously collect and build on the
data it gathered from studies in the past. The data is also used to develop the body of knowledge
in nursing that affects nursing care quality. As a nurse, it is part of your commitment to evaluate
the patient care that you give, as well as come up with the needed improvements to further
patient satisfaction and safety (Montalvo, 2007).
The role of the registered nurse as a leader in terms of care coordination, health
promotion, transition management, etc. is becoming more important as more patients and
families seek these services. Nurse-sensitive quality indicators show the...
