Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) and Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) |
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates that all students with disabilities receive a FAPE in the LRE. The decisions regarding these two components of the law are to be made based solely on the unique needs of each individual student. Teachers will be a part of this decision making process and must adhere to the requirements of IDEA.

The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) dictates that public schools provide all children
with disabilities free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.

FAPE Case- Board of Education v Rowley
One of the FAPE cases is the Board of Education of the Hendrick Hudson School District v.
Rowley which is a 1982 Supreme Court case.

LRE Case- Roncker v. Walter
Roncker v Walter was a 1983 case dealing with LRE. The Ronckers had a mentally retarded son
who was nine years old but his reasoning classified as that of a two-three-year-old.

The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) dictates that public schools provide all
children with disabilities free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment. the

FAPE and LRE are related in that appropriate education requires being in the environment that
makes it the most 'normal' for the special education needs student. These two rights have to go
