Legalizing drags in the USA
Introduction
The use of drugs in the world is increasing at a very alarming rate. Several incidences of
drug abuse are covered in our local, regional as well as international media houses each day. But,
what is an illegal drug? What is drug abuse?
There are several definitions which are attached to the two questions. Among many, an
illegal drug is a drug which is prohibited by a particular country from being used by its citizens.
Such drugs include heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. A drug might be illegal in one place, but
legal in another one. Drug abuse is the taking of illegal drugs which do lead to habitual use by
an individual. What about those who take an overdose or under-dose of prescribed medications
by a doctor or a trained person in the field of medicine? Isn’t that drug abuse? Some people will
say it is not, but the fact is, it is drug abuse. This is because the taken drug doses will affect how
the body functions and it might cause the death of the person if not taken to a health facility in
time, just like any other illegal drug.
There have been emerging issues in the world regarding the legalization of certain drugs
which have been seen for a long time to be illegal. Several factors have contributed to this. For

example, with continued research by scientists in the medicine sector, some of the prohibited
drugs have been found to contain medicinal values to curing certain illnesses. A good example is
marijuana. The question now is, should the governments legalize illegal drugs for their medicinal
values or just because the citizens demand?
The United States government if facing a major issue as to whether legalize or bun the
use of illegal drugs in all states. Legalizing the drugs in the US means that the government will
raise its revenue from taxing the drug dealers. On the other side the society is worried about the
health, social immorality and crimes that will befall the communities upon legalization of the
drugs like marijuana. Which one is the best option? Is it sacrificing the health, social morality
and virtues or increasing the government revenues through taxing the drug dealers in the
country?

Jeff who is thirty five years (35) old is addicted to drugs. He lives in his mother’s house.
He works in a construction in which he is not fully committed. Whenever he receives his pay, he
quickly purchases drugs which have become a habit in his life. He spends most of his time
watching television programs and hanging around with fellow drug addicts. In several
incidences, he has been arrested by the police for drug possession and theft. When he was in
school, drug addiction made him to lose interest in studies and he dropped out of school.
Jeff got married once and had two children. Due to failure to manage the family because
of his spending habits in drugs, the wife left him with the kids and has never come back. He
