     The cell replicates its DNA and then divides leaving you with two cells that are diploid. Then, there is another division, without replicating DNA first, so each of the two diploid cells now becomes two haploid cells (one copy of each chromosome). The end result being four haploid cells. these are called gametes, or sex cells since they are sperm and eggs
