Hotel and restaurants are an integral part of local and state economies, with people
leaving employment and venturing into the hospitality industry. However, starting a restaurant
especially in Virginia could turn out to be a complex task, as hospitality sector has unique
challenges. According to Hoque (2013), underestimation of startup capital for a restaurant is one
challenge that managers face. Huge financing is needed to cater for all expenses that range from
the leasing of a building, staff wages, inventories and interior fit outs. During recessions,
hoteliers also face financial challenges due to customer shortage.
Anyone wishing to invest in hotelier industry in Virginia should prepare a business plan
that will secure funding from a private bank or governmental organization in addition to plan

Planning is another handle that needs to be overcome. Identifying the theme that is appealing to
