Description

The purpose of this assignment is to write a review of the research articles you evaluated in your Topic 5 "Evidence-Based Practice Project: Evaluation of Literature" assignment. If you have been directed by your instructor to select different articles in order to meet the requirements for a literature review or to better support your evidence-based practice project proposal, complete this step prior to writing your review.

A literature review provides a concise comparison of the literature for the reader and explains how the research demonstrates support for your PICOT. You will use the literature review in this assignment in NUR-590, during which you will write a final paper detailing your evidence-based practice project proposal.

In a paper of 1,250-1,500, select eight of the ten articles you evaluated that demonstrate clear support for your evidence-based practice and complete the following for each article:

  1. Introduction - Describe the clinical issue or problem you are addressing. Present your PICOT statement.
  2. Search methods - Describe your search strategy and the criteria that you used in choosing and searching for your articles.
  3. Synthesis of the literature - For each article, write a paragraph discussing the main components (subjects, methods, key findings) and provide rationale for how the article supports your PICOT.
  4. Comparison of articles - Compare the articles (similarities and differences, themes, methods, conclusions, limitations, controversies).
  5. Suggestions for future research: Based on your analysis of the literature, discuss identified gaps and which areas require further research.
  6. Conclusion - Provide a summary statement of what you found in the literature.

Can the use of electronic handovers and structured communication tools help reduce
adverse medical events and increase the quality of care, within 1 year, for heart disease
patients?
Search Methods

To search for the articles, desktop research was relied upon.
Synthesis of the Literature

In the article by Patterson et al., (2019), the authors examined twenty reports describing
twenty-seven patients in the intensive care unit.

The second article examined was by Lee et al. (2018), and it examined 34 nurse trainees
in intraoperative anesthesiology.

It is similar to the research by Patterson et al., (2019) in that they both demonstrate that
electronic protocols in the handover process indeed improves the quality of care.

The study by Shahid, & Thomas (2018) is a mixed research study that employs both
quantitative and descriptive approaches.

The study is similar to the ones already discussed in that it acknowledges that breakdown
in communication is a serious issue in healthcare.

Similar to Lee et al. (2018), Spooner et al., (2018) used a quantitative approach to their
study.

The article benefits from the quantitative approach, from which it is easy to draw
relationships and conclusions.

The study by Raeisi, Rarani, Soltani (2019) qualitatively examines the challenges that
hinder effective communication during handover.

The findings above are similar to those of Spooner et al., (2018).

Tobiano et al, (2020) conducted a study similar to that of Raeisi, Rarani, Soltani (2019).

It resembles the other quantitative studies because statistical analysis is used.

Chong et al, (2020), on the other hand, conducted a study on how nurses perceived
handovers.

The study is unique in that it sought the views of nurses, which no other study discussed
so far did.

Finally, the study by Eysenbuch (2019) used a mixed approach that was predominantly
quantitative to examine bedside observation and handover systems in clinical settings

It is similar to the quantitative studies since it relies heavily on data manipulation and
mathematical relationships.
Knowledge Gaps

The focus of this review was on the benefits of an electronic handover system and the
practical aspects of its implementation in clinical environments.
Conclusion

It has been established from the literature review that the accuracy of nurse-to-nurse
communication can be significantly improved by simply introducing an electronic
handover system.
