Hanif Kureishi’s the Buddha of Suburbia is an autobiographical fiction novel Published
in 1990 by Faber and Faber. This masterpiece examines the life and experiences of minorities in
post-war Britain and their struggle to fit in and establish their identity. In this piece, Hanif
Kureishi reflects on Karim Arim’s journey of coming-of-age in the face of social and sexual
identity struggles in 1970s Britain. During this period, racism and ethnicity were central to the
experiences of immigrants in Britain due to institutionalized discrimination displayed by the
Conservative government of the time. The aftermath of World War II was characterized by an
influx of migrants in Britain and this created a significant racist reaction among Britons. The fact
that Britain was controlling the significant number of colonies in the nineteenth century created
the impression that other races and their cultural values were inferior and uncivilized. The author
provides a glimpse of immigrants' struggle with identity and prejudices through the eyes of
Karim.
The protagonist in the novel, Karim, belongs to two distinct cultures but he is not
