The theme of vulnerability and need is highly evident throughout the play. Different
characters experience emotional hunger and vulnerability situations in the play, leading
to harmful results at the end. First of all, the main character in the play which is Hester
is presented in a state of permanent vulnerability. To begin with, Hester is physically
vulnerable because she is homeless with no husband. Additionally, she is emotionally
vulnerable because of the exploitations and abuse she has encountered throughout her
life. She complains that even when she was at her homeless shelter, where she had
promised herself and her children safe, she was still vulnerable because people still
trespassed in her dwellings. In detail, her children are touched in unwelcoming ways
by strangers, and their belongings are also stolen. Her last option, which she thinks is
the safest place to live with her children, is the streets.

symbolized by their physical hunger for food which is never met fully. In some
instances, jabber, the eldest son of Hester, dies in her hands because he cannot
comprehend his mother's rage and the need for her attention. Although Hester is
knowledgeable, she is illiterate, a state which creates more vulnerability in that she
lives in an environment and system that she does not understand fully.
During her interactions with Reverend D. and Chilli, Hester’s emotional hunger is
revealed. She demands both financial and physical support from the two men. She also
feels that she has some power over them because of her desirability as a sexual object.
However, she is highly mistaken because when she informs the two men about her
needs, they humiliate her even more by reminding her that she is an illiterate and a
homeless single mot...
