Description

What does nursing philosophy have to do with your practice and how you practice as an advanced practice nurse?

Nursing philosophy play an important role in my current practice as a registered nurse, who seeks to further their education and practice as a family nurse practitioner in the future. I believe my nursing philosophy defines who I’m as a nurse and create the foundation of my nursing profession and future goals. In my understanding, philosophy of nursing is the approach to nursing; every nurse has its own philosophy of nursing created by their own practice and experience in the field. A philosophy guides the practice involving critical thinking, knowledge and ethic. According to the textbook, philosophy is the examination of ideas (Butts & Rich, 2015). Every nurse has adopted their own nursing philosophy and/or theorybased on their believes and experience. If we go back in history the nursing pioneers developed their own philosophies, theories and models based on their experience and believes. For example, Florence Nightingale developed her holistic philosophy and environment theory based on her believes and experience as a nurse during the Crimean war. Through my years of experience, I developed my own philosophy, which is to provide exceptional care using a holistic approach. I believe it is imperative to consider the emotional and spiritual aspect, not just the physical aspect. When patients are treated with a holistic approach, they feel a sense of trust which lead to positive outcomes.
