The National Institute of Mental health reports that about one in every five Americans
have mental health problems, yet only half of this population receives treatment. Moreover,
according to the World Health Organization, anxiety and depression disorders rank in the first
position as the cause of disabilities and ill-health worldwide. WHO also reports that service
workers, significantly the 10 million working in the culinary industry, are more susceptible to
mental health problems than salaried workers and employees in other sectors. However, despite
mental health being prevalent in all of the United States, California is more prone to the issue.
For instance, the restaurant and hospitality community in Sacramento, California, lost more than
12 individuals to mental health issues, such as suicide and substance abuse. Factors contributing
to these disparities are not entirely clear, but low wages, high-pressure environment, lack of full
benefits, and other systematic issues in the industry play a role.
The culinary industry has the newest jobs in the United States economy. However, its
workers hold some of the lowest-paid occupations. For instance, the median hourly wage in this
industry, tips included, amounts to 10 dollars, which is lower than 18 dollars for workers outside
the industry (Gatley, 2016). Moreover, after considering demographic differences between
culinary and other workers, the hourly wage of workers in this industry is 17% lower than that of
similar workers in other sectors. Waiters and waitresses make the largest industry occupation,
accounting for almost a quarter of all culinary jobs. However, this occupation has an hourly
wage of 10 dollars. Counter attendants and cashiers make the lowest-paid occupations with a
typical salary of 8 dollars an hour. The highest-paid employees in this industry are managers,
with a standard 15 dollars per hour wage, which is still lower than the overall media wage for
jobs in other sectors.

The industry also lacks funds or benefits for workers to get the support and treatment
they require. According to the Heirloom Foundation survey, less than 18% of restaurants offer
health benefits for their employees (Eurídice Martínez Steele & Monteiro 2017). Most of the
workers in the industry have families, and these wages are not enough to support themselves or
their families. Some of them have to take extra shifts or work multiple jobs to earn enough
money. As a result, workers in the culinary industry tend to develop mental health issues because
they do not make enough to support their living regardless of the effort they put. Furthermore,
working multiple jobs adds to the stress of being underpaid and does not leave them time for
self-care, resulting in a detrimental effect on mental health.
Restaurants are high-stress and time-sensitive environments. Individuals who are working
in the culinary industry experience constant pressure because every service counts. Head chefs
and managers leverage every tool they have, such as yelling and pushing workers to maintain
