Impairment of nurses or other healthcare service providers can be very dangerous
for the patients receiving the care or other coworkers of the impaired individual. Using
illegal drugs causes impairment of nurses (Foli et al., 2020). As a nurse, I am obligated
by profession and the institution where I work to report any case of illegal drug abuse.
Having known that one of the nurses in my unit is using illegal drugs, it is my duty to
present this information to the appropriate people to ensure the safety of our clients and
coworkers. Disclosing this information is the correct thing to do for both the safety of
people and for the nurse. The nurse can be taken to a rehabilitation center, thereby
receiving treatment programs for the abuse of illegal drugs.
