IMMORTAL BELOVED QUESTIONNAIRE Ludwig van Beethoven was a complicated man; musical genius, curmudgeon, lover of women but never married, an uncompromising person. This film charts his life and speculates upon the possible eventual recipient of his letter to his “Immortal Beloved”. Although the conclusion of the film regarding this recipient is not shared by most historians and musicologists, the musical journey that Beethoven endured is, for the most part, accurate. Gary Oldman’s own musical talent is used to great effect in this film (he was training to become a concert pianist in his teens and switched his career path to become an actor), although he does not actually play on the soundtrack. Those are Oldman’s own hands you see on the piano in the film. Each question is worth 20 points. Please answer as fully as possible – the more you write the better. Points will be deducted for spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes at a rate of one point per error, including repeated errors of the above. Points will be deducted for answers short of the question minimum at a rate of one point per word. 1) Share your impressions of one scene in which Beethoven’s internal agony over his encroaching deafness was overwhelming. (50 words or more) 2) "It is the power of music to carry one directly into the mental state of the composer. The listener has no choice. It is like hypnotism." Beethoven writes this to Schindler in the film. Is there a piece of music, or a particular style of music that has this effect on you? Describe it. (50 words or more) 3) What character in this film did you admire/love/hate/pity the most and why? You may choose one or more of these choices. (50 words or more) 4) Choose one scene from the film in which the music played a particularly strong role. How did the music add to the drama of the scene? Be specific. (50 words or more) 5) Write a short review of this film overall. What would you say to someone who has never seen the film? Would you recommend it to them or not? Give specific examples to back up your thoughts. (50 words or more) AMADEUS QUESTIONNAIRE Amadeus was a successful play written by Peter Shaffer. The screenplay for the movie was written by Shaffer and Milos Forman, the director. Shaffer insisted that he have complete artistic control of the script. The film, while based on the play, is substantially different. In real life Salieri and Mozart were not sworn enemies and Salieri did not hide his identity to pay Mozart to write a requiem mass that he would later try to pass off as his own! 1) In watching this film, is there a modern, contemporary artist that you think will one day be compared to Mozart in his time? Will that person/entity have a lasting musical presence, as Mozart has done? (50 words or more) 2) What was the meaning of the Emperor’s yawn during Mozart’s opera performance at court? What effect might it have had on future performances of the work? (50 words or more) 3) What character in this film did you admire/love/hate/pity the most and why? You may choose one or more of these choices. (50 words or more) 4) Choose one scene from the film in which the music played a particularly strong role. Question 1
Contemporary art that can be compared to Mozart is Kanye West. West is an acclaimed gospel
artist who arouses numerous controversies when he pivoted suddenly to produce Christianinspired music. Despite some of his albums receiving mixed reviews from the industry, fans, and
internet critics, West has upheld his outstanding performance in gospel music production (Opera
on Video, 2019). Some critics asserted that his current music reveals his shrunken world of
music, but he will last long in the music presence. His albums stretch the audience’s perspectives
and imaginations.
Question 2
Emperor’s yawn during the performance meant that the performance was taking too long then he
could concentrate. The performance was four hours long, whereas Emperor’s attention could
span for an hour only. There were numerous notes in Mozart’s performance. The yawn depicted
that the show would not survive very long...
