Explain the formation of the ionic compound composed of each pair of element for sodium and nitrogen

Jan 12th, 2015

Na (sodium) is a metal in the 1st column, that mean it has a charge of 1+,

N( nitorgen) is 3 rows from the noble gases ( last row.) ultimatly N wants to imitate a noble gas, which has a full valance shell. So if its 3 away its charge is : 3- , which means in order for the equation to be balanced..I think that you'l need 3 Sodiums.

So it would be Na3N
