Can groups of organisms demonstrate individual properties? Provide an example from class to support your definition of individual emergent properties. 2- Darwin ascribed specific emotions to animals and did so from a human (or anthropocentric) perspective. By definition, this would be considered anthropomorphism. Provide both a positive and a negative consequence of anthropomorphism in biology. For example, the current population estimate of humans in the United States is approximately 328 million. However, age structure is an important aspect of understanding trajectory of a population. How does age structure data contribute to our understanding of a population? Compare two countries from the data we studied in lecture. 5-Pumpkinseed sunfish in different pond populations revealed variance in population growth. Describe how age class and survival probabilities inform our interpretation of these data. Support your answer with a description of how age structures are emergent properties in these populations. 6-Describe the dynamics of a metapopulation and the subpopulations from which it persists. Include in your answer relevant examples from class and how the geography of the subpopulations may affect the structure of the overall metapopulation. 7- What is an example of a population of species that was saved from extinction? Describe how the anthropocentric value of the species informed decisions of its conservation and management.8-What are the advantages and disadvantages of herd mentality? Compare the strategy in a flock of birds to a school of fish. 9-How do the dynamics of a food web reveal the emergent properties of a community or ecosystem? Provide relevant examples from class. 10- In his classic ecology study, Paine (1966) described Pisaster as a keystone species. Describe what a keystone species is and why he came to this conclusion.
