Elements of iCARE
Inter-professional teamwork in nursing is an essential element in providing quality
healthcare services (Allbaugh et al., 2020). At my workplace, I operate as a nursing practitioner
in a healthcare facility within my hometown. My particular role includes providing a
comprehensive assessment of patients, diagnosing disease, and commencing the treatment
process where possible. In my working set, it is difficult to alone as a nurse professional.
Although the organization has made some efforts to improve inter-professional teamwork, more
should be done to improve coordination and collaboration. The area that needs improvement
relates to the aspect of shared decision-making among inter-professional teamwork. Considering
the advanced role of a nurse practitioner, it is vital to enhance decision-making among
professionals to improve patient outcomes. The focus is on nursing actions involved in the
iCARE element that can result in better patient outcomes.
Compassion
In nursing, compassion entails being close to the patients and seeing their needs beyond
medication situations. Compassionate, collaborative care (CCC) is a nursing action that can be
undertaken to improve team nursing. Essentially, compassion involves empathy and sympathy
from the nurse vital foundation of CCC. In achieving CCC, there should be a collaboration
between patients, families, and other healthcare professionals where they all work together to
develop and provide care based on the agreed goals or objectives. Collaboration without
compassion leads to depersonalized care which does not satisfy the critical needs of both
emotional and psychosocial needs (Boykin & Wright, 2018).

. As a result, the healthcare teams need to apply CCC by supporting others and
sharing concerns to enhance the patients' wellness, resilience, and health.

Some of the characteristics of CC include provider-provider relationships, shared
empowerment, emotional support, open communication, and shared decisionmaking among the healthcare inter-professional team (Lown et al., 2016).

CCC would greatly impact the unit I operate by creating a healthier and safer
organizational culture. The culture will be established by effective communication
and collaboration among healthcare professionals and patients or families.
Advocacy

An advocacy action in this concept relates to the efforts inter-professional teams in
nursing can undertake in ensuring the development of desirable policies to facilitate the effective
functioning of inter-professional teams. In achieving this goal, the nurse should take leadership
positions in the healthcare organization or unit and participate in developing and implementing
the policies and programs (Lown et al., 2016).

The advocacy would have some positive impacts, such as improvement in
communication, coordination of patients and physicians.

In particular, to the nurse practitioners, the advocacy would include calling for
policies that limit the role of nurse practitioners in undertaking certain medical
roles.

The advocacy for team-based policies and programs would positively impact as
shared decision-making would ensure patients, families, and relevant healthcare
professionals participate in decision-making.

Resilience
Inter-professional collaboration and resilience have a mutual relationship. The nursing
action for resilience in the unit of comprehensive assessment and diagnosis is education and
support. In support activities, the nurse practitioner undertakes roles such as holding discussions
with colleagues, obtaining a comprehensive, relevant social, medical, and health history of
patients, performing preventive and diagnostic procedures based on the history or age of the
patients (Boykin & Wright, 2018).

On the other hand, education improves the nurses’ professional practice and
knowledge to enhance resilient for improvement strategies.

Through the two resilient activities, the organizational culture of the hospital
facility.

The positive impacts of the nursing actions include the provision of holistic care,
reducing turnover rates, improving the working environment, reducing emotional
burnout and stress, shared and proactive decision making.
Evidence-based Practice (EBP)

In comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of patients, the nursing action to enhance
EBP entails team-based learning. The action would involve establishing inter-professional teams
that will undertake an active and life-long spirit of inquiring to identify available, current, and
best evidence that can be put into practice (Cullen et al., 2020).

When the inter-professional teams engage in the spirit of inquiry, some of the
positive outcomes would include improving quality of care services, care
coordination, patient efficiency, and care.

In diagnosis and patient assessment, EBP provides a new rationale for
determining the patient’s illnesses and determining the appropriate treatment
procedure to undertake.
Summary

The iCARE components provide for the nursing actions that can be taken to improve
organizational culture, interpersonal collaboration, and ultimately patient outcomes. In summary,
the nursing action includes implementing CCC to compassion to patients, influencing policy
formulation by being part of nursing leadership, support and education to enhance resilience, and
adopting team-based learning to embrace EBP.
