Environmental Issue: Agricultural water needs and the Everglades
Located in South Florida, the Everglades National Park is an internationally known park
for its fascinating wildlife and wetlands that provides water to local agriculture. However,
because efforts have been given to sustain agriculture, the Everglades is currently half of its size
– which affects the wildlife, including species richness, diversity, and distribution (Perry et al.,
2004). According to Perry, 2004, there has been an approximate reduction of 70% of water flow
in the Everglades (Perry et al., 2004). Additionally, the quality of the remaining water is also
considered to be low (Perry et al., 2004). The severity of the problems involving the Everglades
led to the creation of a billionaire restoration plan, which was approved in 2004 by the congress.
However, such plan included multiple generalizations and demanded in depth revision as the
environmental role of contaminants was not evaluated, as well as the efficacy of the plan was
considered to be theoretical only (Perry et al., 2004). In 2015, the spatial extent of the
Everglades was approximately 50% reduced as compared to its original extent (Aument et al.,
2015)
Unfortunately, the issue around the Everglades is not improving. According to Aumen et
al (2015), the simulated 2060 hydrology of the Everglades included: (i) higher temperatures; (ii)
higher evapotranspiration; (iii) increased sea levels; (iv) and either an increase or decrease in
rainfall (Aumen et al., 2015). In my opinion, the best solution to solve this issue includes the
construction of flow equalization basins, which may provide water flow to the stormwater
treatment areas – that has is currently being implemented. Continuous research to ensure water
quality and contaminant control is also necessary. These measures are already in place as
reported by the water management district of South Florida.
