First Question: In this week’s reading, “Self-Help and Thrift,” Samuel Smiles discusses the selfdetermination of man. Throughout history there has always been an issue with the balance of the Government’s power over the people, or more specifically how much power they feel there should be over them. According to Smiles, “Even the best institutions can give a man no active help. Perhaps the most they can do is, to leave him free to develop himself and improve his individual condition.” (Self-Help 276) So my question this week is, do you think that the current state of the world today makes it more necessary to have government assistance or social programs, in comparison the the times of the Industrial Revolution? If so, why? Second Question: The industrial revolution took place from 1760 to 1840. The industrial revolution created new machines that could produce goods at a faster pace and was more affordable than hiring people to do the job which helped business flourish but took away jobs for many people. People who worked in factories were dismissed of their duties to make room for machines, everyone lost their jobs and the population during this time became very poor. The industrial revolution is continuing and the machines we create now are much higher tech and can do multiple jobs which also creates more issues for the working class and a lot of people these years are homeless and struggling. My question after this week’s reading is was the second industrial revolution more important than the first one? Which one really impacted more people?

wide gap in-between. Therefore government assistance and many social programs were critical
in narrowing this gap. It was considered acceptable and even fashionable for the rich to give to
the poor. The emergence of philanthropy and government benevolence helped to close this gap.
In the modern world today, continued industrialization has led to the creation of a group of
individuals with enormous wealth and fortune and high connections. As opposed to the 1880's
when the industrial revolution took place, these...
