1. Locate 3 newspaper and/or magazine articles on a topic related to social
media
▪ These articles need to be from credible sources
▪ Supply full APA citations in your report (see below)
2. Then, you will need to write a 3-5 page summary and reflection of these
articles.
▪ For the summary section, briefly describe the content of each
article
▪ One full page summary per news article
▪ Don’t use quotations – they should only be used for
definitions of concepts. I do not want to see sentences of
quotations. You should be paraphrasing the content
using your own words.
▪ For the reflection section, provide some of your personal reactions
to this article (Did you think it was interesting? If so, why? Did you
agree/disagree with the conclusions of the article? If so,
why? Can you think of a personal example this relates to in your
own social media habits?, etc.). This section should be at least 1
page. You should also use this section to compare the information
in the articles and how they relate to each other and relate to
concepts that are discussed in your textbook and/or to the
discussions the class had had on the discussion board.
3. When you are finished, upload your completed assignment to Canvas by its
due date. As it states in your syllabus, late reports will be penalized.

Social media and its negative impact on teens
According to an expert, underlying issues may render teenagers vulnerable to social
media influences (Klass, 2019). Recently, there has been increased anxiety about young people
and social media, and questions raised regarding their vulnerability and mental health, suicide,
and sleep. Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) published a report that looked at
the rates of suicide. The target population was those between 10 and 19 years old between 1975
and 2016. Boys have in the past taken the lead in suicide; however, the gap has been narrowing
as the suicidal rates among the adolescent girls rise with the highest being in girls aged between
10 and 14 years. Dr. Michael Rich, a Harvard University’s Associate professor, states that
people need to look at how kids and everyone is utilizing social media instead of drawing vague
conclusions. He said that technology is not the problem; people are the problem.
At Boston Children’s Hospital, he stated, they are discovering four indications of the
problematic interactive application of media as they refer it. The four include gaming which
affects boys mostly, social media higher among girls, pornography which has increasingly gotten
into kids and finally information bingeing. The common thing about these issues is that they
emanate as a result of underlying problems, he said. Such matters include; ADHD (Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), depression, or social anxiety. Dr. Rich said once the underlying
problem has been treated in kids, most often, the behaviors stop or become more manageable.
Dr. Radovic has pointed out that teenagers look up for social media to explore their identity and
to seek solutions to various matters. The matter escalates to extreme levels when they cannot
differentiate between the negative and positive content says Dr. Radovic.
Evidence that screen time hurts kids
Worries that the world of digital is harmful have snowballed for a long time (Orben,
2019). Statements about video games, smartphones, and social media, leading to psychological
health issues have become rampant. Books are being launched every day by the tech luminaries
who castigate their creations, citing addictive or adverse effects of digital technologies. In a
world facing political polarization, social divides, and ecological destruction, should the
technology occupy a tiny percentage of our minds? The exaggeration has accelerated by the fact
that people want to sell books, have successful speaking tours, and market their detox clinics.
Therefore, we ask ourselves whether digital media harm our children and if as a society, we need
to take fast remedies towards the concerns. One writer argues that it is the amount of time that
young people spend on devices that affect them negatively. While the truth is some studies have
demonstrated that teenagers that consume a lot of social media have reduced wellbeing, the
majority of these results are not reliable, and their conclusion can spark outrage regarding their
statistical accuracy.
Scientists working on this subject are aware of these problems, but numerous
commentators do not know or do not mind that they are absorbing information from evidence
full of errors. Rather than hypothesizing about the technology effects, we should measure how
social networks’ impacts on life satisfaction on an individual, over time. A study was carried out
in 10,000 teens and preteens from Britain for a period of close to 10 years. Each year individuals
would rate their use of social media and report their levels of satisfaction in all life aspects. The
results showed a complete opposite of what is expected as most adolescents did not have adverse
effects that were directly attributable to social media. The conclusion is that most of the data that
could be useful to the researchers is locked in the servers of owners of social networks. Until
they share the data, we shall remain to guess about the repercussions of digital media to
adolescents.
The Good Side of Social Media
Social media does not always have negative impacts, but it has a lot of benefits
(Agrawal,2016). The world is a global community which is connected by social media. Some of
the benefits of using this platform include; quick communication- messages can be delivered
faster to the public. This helps the public to stay informed on what is happening globally. With
the information, security will be handled very well since it will enable the security team to make
sure the general public is safe. The platform can also be used to deliver traffic messages.
Information about life-saving and the hazards of careless driving can help drivers to change their
attitudes and bad driving habits. There is increased teen awareness through the use of social
media. It brings a sense of belonging to young people since they feel involved in what is
happening. This enables them to stay informed, which is very important since the world needs
them in making a real difference.
The social media platform creates the largest network. With almost everybody using it,
marketing is increased. Businesses use this platform to reach a large number of consumers and
get information about their products. This enables the business to improve on their products and
deliver the best to the public. Companies also post on social media when launching a new
product, which increases awareness to consumers and in turns increases the revenues. The social
media platform serves as the best and cost-effective method of marketing. Developers use the
social media platform to understand areas that lack internet access. Internet connects families
that live in different countries and help them know about the status of their loved ones. The
platform is also the best place to ask for support in case of a natural disaster. A hashtag is created
to enable the public to locate the story and give the support required.
Reflections
The article was appealing because it gave detailed information with the inclusion of data
and studies to reinforce the arguments. Two qualified Psychiatrists have been quoted giving their
views on the subject and considering their superior experience in the research of mental health;
one does not doubt their points. I concur with the author of the first article, which entails the
effects of social media on teens. Although there has been a lot of good since the inception of
social networks has led to a lot of setbacks among the younger generation. I have found myself
drawn too much to the devices, and sometimes, my productivity is lowered until I withdraw from
them. Therefore, I support the conclusion that social media has influenced suicidal thoughts and
insomnia among teenagers.
The article was not much captivating because most of the views were not backed by
concrete evidence. The report castigated the existence of harmful effects of digital media on the
wellbeing of the teens and preteens. I do not concur with the author that no evidence exists
regarding the matter. However, I partly support that most people rebuking digital media out
ulterior motives and not based on evidence; hence, while spewing negativity about the platforms,
they should not exaggerate as they also have their strengths.
The last article is very interesting since it talks about the things that we do daily. Social
media have positive and negative impacts on our life, which depends on how one uses it. I
strongly agree with this point because when used in the right way, it creates a lot of benefits, and
the world being one community is better positioned in helping each other when need arise. The
article also cautions the public on the hazards incorrect use of social media can cause and
emphasizes on the right use of this platform.
