ROLE OF ASSESSMENT IN COUNSELLING

Role of Assessment in Counselling
Initially, my perception of assessment in counseling was quite shallow as I viewed it like
a simple procedure that could be randomly carried out and that it was not compulsory. However,
after being taught, I have come to appreciate assessment as one of the most important procedures
that a counselor should be well versed with and conduct every time he or she interacts with the
client. Based on my new understanding of assessment, the procedure is quite systematic, and the
main aim should be to gather the maximum amount of information from the client for use in the
counseling process as well as to comprehend the background of the patient for effective
counseling properly.
Additionally, I have been able to understand that the process can be both formal and
informal depending on the level of professionalism and needs of the client. Initially, I thought
assessment was a procedure that intruded the privacy of the patient. Throughout the ten weeks, I
learned that the primary role of assessment is to gather necessary information from the client.
Through assessment techniques like interviews and direct observation, the counselor is bale to
understand any personal and family-related issues that are affecting the client as well as
contributing to their problem.
Through being taught that assessment is useful in determining the kind of counseling to
use on a client, my understanding of the counseling procedure was understood. I learned that
counseling is a systematic process that requires one to first have a deep understanding of the
client’s background. Therefore, as a counselor, it is important to use assessment as a tool to
establish which counseling method will work best for the client.

ROLE OF ASSESSMENT IN COUNSELLING
Through my understanding that evaluation in counseling is useful in establishing the
counseling goals and objectives, I have learned the most effective way of planning for a
counseling method. I initially thought that a set of counseling goals and objectives could be
tailored to suit any client during the counseling process. I have however learned that as a
counselor, one should make use of the assessment procedure to be able to lay out effective goals
and objectives that will help the patient to overcome the psychological issues that make them be
in need of counseling.

advanced age, it is common for individuals to feel vulnerable and detached from the rest of the
world with little to do with a lot of idle time available. In cases where people of advanced age are
still together, it becomes much easier to find comfort and encourage each other through the
difficult situation. However, for the case of Allen, he is dealing with loneliness symptoms since
this wife who could give him company is no longer there. Additionally, he is staying far away
from his family and therefore Lacks Company to make him feel appreciated and loved.
As a counselor, I would first conduct a loneliness assessment using the UCLA 3-item
loneliness scale to determine the background of Allen, issues that he is sensitive about as well as
come up with goals and objectives of the counseling. One of the primary variables in the scale
would be whether Allen is content with the remaining friendships and relationships. It is
important to understand that one of the risk factors of loneliness is the company available and
how one feels about them. If Allen is not content with the company that has remained after the
loss of his wife, then it is critical to set counseling goals aimed at widening the pool of friends
that Allen has in order for him to overcome loneliness.
Another background information that would be critical to collect from Allen’s case is
whether his children spend enough time with him and are avail...
