Description

Child Interview: Conduct a 15 – 30 minute interview with a child of any age (4 – 12) – This should be a conversation and not a counseling session. *** YOU DO NOT HAVE TO INTERVIEW A CHILD OBVIOUSLY. JUST PRETEND FOR THE SAKE OF THE PAPER

Reflection/Analysis Paper: After your interview, you will complete a brief paper (3-4 APA style pages, not including title page and references) that is a reflection/analysis of your experience and a comparison between your experience and a relevant child development theory. Please do not include any identifying information in your paper. Reflection/analysis papers must follow the current edition of APA publication manual that includes a title page, 3--4 pages of text, and a reference page.Reflection/analysis papers must include the following within the 3 – 4 pages of text:

  • Make comparisons between your experience and one theory’s constructs of child development. For example, a child’s behavior may be described using both the theoretical constructs of Erikson and the theoretical constructs of Bandura and this would provide a deeper conceptualization of the behavior. Students may choose to compare observations to such child development theories as those mentioned above (Sources must be cited and referenced). Comparisons should link specific concepts from the theory with concrete examples from the observations or vice-versa.
  • Include a brief description of the interviewed child (age gender, other descriptors). Also include
    • The child’s interests and strengths,
    • The way the child describes him/herself
    • The child’s relationships (family, peers, teachers, etc.)
  • Include your reflections/analysis on the interview and your experiences (was it easy and natural or uncomfortable? Was rapport quickly established or did it take a while, etc.)
  • Include a description of what you observed regarding communication between you and the child and how this will impact the counseling you conduct with children from this age group. You can also link this to developmental stages of communication in children if necessary and us information from your interview.
  • Briefly describe how you will use the information gathered from the interview to improve your work as a counselor generally and with children/families.

significant to human counselling such as crawling, talking, and walking (Goodman et al., 2017).
The first phase of child counselling proves to be essential for the child's character to be
determined during this time. It essential for a child counsellor to engage with the child during
this age to mentor the child into the person they would like the child to become when they adult.
