Description
Part II: Family History Paper
- Write a six- to eight-page (1,500-2,000-word) paper that assesses the significance of substance use disorders or mental health issues in the family represented Part I.
- The paper should reflect your understanding of the family dynamics and other issues covered in this course and should incorporate concepts and references as appropriate. Focus on key themes in your paper; do not simply repeat the historical facts that are evident in the genogram (e.g., names, family structure, and dates).
- At a minimum, include the following:
- The family history of substance use disorders and/or mental health issues
- Family themes or patterns that became evident through your interviews (including possible genetic influences, family dynamics, social factors, intergenerational issues)
- Identification of points at which treatment was offered or received, or at which treatment/intervention might have had a beneficial effect, had it been offered.
- Results/impact of treatment received
- Significant events which may have impacted a family member’s substance use or which may have been a direct result of his/her substance use or treatment
- Identification of substance use and mental health risk factors for family members of your generation and future generations
- Professional assessment: Look at the information you have gathered as if you were a professional substance abuse counselor. Do you believe that there are current substance use issues that warrant intervention in the family that you have described? If so, where would you direct educational, preventive, or treatment efforts? Explain your rationale.
- Summary – a brief synopsis of what you learned in this project and its personal significance for you.

Family history of substance use disorders
Alcohol and substance abuse has maintained a constant presence and trend in the family
since the earlier generations and has been passed to the current generation. The different
generations have abused alcohol and other drugs in different ways with the practice being passed
from grandparents, to parents and now the parents have passed the practice to their children.
Even though alcohol and substance abuse has not led to serious mental disorders in the family,
there have been other emotional and physical consequences. Interventions and medications have
been administered in the past and even though the abuse is not as high as it was for previous
generations, there is still a possibility that it will be passed on to the next generation.
Evident patterns
Through the interview, it was evident that most of the abuse was genetic. Individuals who
had strong addictions passed them on to their children and once all the affected parties became
addicted, withdrawal symptoms were severe. Earlier generations exposed their children to
alcoholic and substance abuse environment. Growing up, children saw their parents abusing
drunks and therefore copied their behavior. Therefore, it was established that growing up in a
drug abuse environment was one of the main contributing factors. Influence by peers during
social gatherings was also a key contributor to the abuse.
However, the patterns on both genetics and environmental factors contributing to the
addictions were hard to separate because Nature and Nurture seemed to be integrating in causing
alcohol and substance abuse. Children grew up with their parent’s genes and therefore were
predisposed to alcoholism. At the same time, the children grew up in a drug and alcohol
conducive environment and therefore, they saw parents who acted as role models abuse drugs.

Availability of drugs and alcohol in the house was also a huge contributor (David C. R. Kerr,
2013). Growing up in such environment made it easier to get addicted because it was easy to
unwind using alcohol after a long day. The stress in socializing with other individuals was also a
key contributor. Family members who struggled to relate to peers especially at a young age used
drugs to cub social anxiety. Social gathers in which alcohol is usua...
