The book starts with a young girl reminiscing about all the different homes she has lived in her life on various streets. Her story is a bit sad as she recollects memories of having to share 1 bathroom among several family members. Her story turns to excitement as she talks about her father promising that the family would move to a much larger home on Mango Street with several bedrooms and several baths after the pipes burst in her most recent home. Quickly though, excitement becomes sadness again as her dream home turns out to be just as cramped and run down as the previous homes she has lived in with her family. You can feel her shame as she points to her house and can see wooden bars nailed into place where windows should be on the top floor of a recently broken-into laundromat.
