Description

  1. Week 3 Assignment - Conflicting Viewpoints Essay: Part 1
The assignment is divided into two parts: the prewriting paper (Part 1) due this week, and the essay (Part 2) due in Week 5.Overview
When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking by playing the "Believing Game." The Believing Game is about making the effort to "believe," or at least consider, the reasons for an opposing view on an issue.Instructions
    1. In the Week 2 Discussion, you examined the biases discussed in Chapter 2 of the webtext and reviewed one of the topics from Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues. You may use the same topic from this discussion or find another:
      • Select one of the topics from Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues, state your position on the issue, and identify three premises (reasons) listed under either the Pro or Con section—whichever section opposes your position.
      • For the three premises (reasons) that oppose your position on the issue, answer these “believing” questions suggested by Elbow:
        • What's interesting or helpful in this view?
        • What would I notice if I believed this view?
        • In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?
    2. Read the excerpt about critical thinking processes: The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful [PDF].
    3. Engage in prewriting to examine your thoughts.

Pros and Cons of Controversial Issues Hello Professor and Classmates, Topic: Should Marijuana Be a Medical Option? My stance on the topic: I believe the FDA should legalize marijuana as a medicine option. Opposing the use of medical marijuana in the face of what amounts to a statewide opioid addiction epidemic is illogical. Why not offer a safer alternative to patients? Why should doctors be able to administer dangerous, addictive opiates but not lawfully prescribe medical marijuana? Marijuana has a little addictive effect, and there is no risk of death from marijuana withdrawal. Pro’s 1) Marijuana is medicine: This plant-based treatment should be a feasible and affordable choice for all patients. Scientific data backs up its use to treat various illnesses and conditions. 2) Side effects: I discovered that marijuana not only has a wide range of medical applications, but it also has fewer negative effects than other drugs. In addition to pain relief, medicinal marijuana can help with anxiety, hopelessness, and insomnia, which are all significant side effects of chronic pain. 3) Reduce chronic pain: Cancer, spinal cord injury and disease, severe spasms, PTSD, nausea, glaucoma, Parkinson's disease and other unpleasant disorders have all been demonstrated to benefit from medical marijuana. If patients are permitted to use the medication, it may be useful in other instances. What is interesting or helpful in this view? Medical marijuana has the potential to help individuals wean themselves selves off opioids. What would I notice if I believed this view? It has been found in studies to be an extremely effective treatment for seizures and chronic pain. In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true? Denying individuals with major health conditions, a prescription could help them manage pain and discomfort with minimal, if any, adverse effects that are illogical and potentially callous. Vickie Gaines I totally agree that prayer should be in schools. People say, oh, you should not be pushing religion off on individuals, yet our currency states in God we trust. I think children should start out knowing that prayer can ease a stressful day. https://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/questions/should-marijuana-be-a-medical-option/

Few subjects stir up stronger emotions among medical practitioners, policymakers,
scientists, and the general public than medical marijuana. Issues arise concerning its safety,
legality, addictive component, and effectiveness. The most common use of medical marijuana is
in managing chronic pain that affects millions of Americans. To that end, I believe that the FDA
should legalize marijuana and approve it to be used as a medicine option. Objecting to its use
amidst increased abuse and opioid addiction is illogical. It would be feasible to offer a safer
alternative to patients instead of administering dangerous and addictive o...
