The identified research problem is the impact that the change in shift report from private to bedside report has on patients. The author includes background stating that literature provides several benefits of bedside nursing shift report. However, other studies had not provided quantitative reports supporting this process change. The significance of this research is that the findings can be used to alter current nursing practices in facilities to improve patient and nursing satisfaction and better patient safety outcomes. (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014) Did the author clearly articulate the research purpose? What was the purpose of the research? The author states that the aim of this research initiative is to quantify quantitative outcomes of the change of practice to a blended form of bedside report. Therefore, this research was done to support previous literatures claims that there are benefits to bedside nursing shift report. (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014) Identify the study methodology. The study methodology is a quantitative study where seven medical surgical units implemented a blend of recorded and bedside nursing reports. Outcomes monitored included patient satisfaction, nursing satisfaction, patient falls, nursing overtime, and medication errors. Review of literature includes the benefits of bedside report and the drawbacks of bedside report. Review of literature also includes the process of implementing bedside reports and how organizations can make this change. There is also a review on how organizations can improve already established bedside report practices. Literature states that more studies need to be done to show the significance of the results. (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014) Describe the theoretical framework for the research study? There is not use of theoretical framework in this research study. What are the research objectives, questions, hypotheses, and procedures identified in the article? The research objective is to quantify quantitative outcomes of a practice change to a blended form of bedside nursing report It is questioned whether or not previous literature is correct on the statement that bedside nursing report is more beneficial for both patients and nurses. No hypothesis was given The procedure includes collecting baseline data related to nurse perceptions about the shift report process and patient perceptions about nursing care through survey. Nursing education was provided on the new report change and then implemented to the seven medical units. After three months of post practice change, the initial survey was given again to both nurses and patients for a third time. Then, after 13 months, the initial survey was given again to both nurses and patients. (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014) Describe the results of the study along with identified strengths and limitations. Include appropriate terms for rigor in quantitative research NUR3643 Research and Theory The patient views on nursing care during the baseline survey was high as well as before and after the implementation of the new report practice. The average of all three surveys was a score of 4 out of 5 points for nursing satisfaction. The nurse views on the effectiveness of original report process during the baseline survey was higher than the survey report after the 3-month implementation. However, at the 13-month survey, the nurses views on the effectiveness of the new bedside report increased drastically. (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014) Discuss the findings including relevancy to clinical practice. Patients felt that they were receiving quality nursing care before and after the implementation of beside shift report. However, patients found that bedside report showed better nurse-tonurse communication and allowed for ore patient involvement in care. Nurses originally found their recorded/private shift report was efficient. However, after the end of the implementation trial, nurses perceived an increase in nurse accountability, an increase in patient involvement and an increase in prevention of patient safety problems.
