describe some of the rocks around your school, home, or neighborhood. Describe some of their properties, such as how they look, the minerals that you think are in them, their texture and feel, and any other distinguishing features. Discuss whether or not any of the rocks you find look like those you have learned about so far in this unit (Sedimentary Rocks).
This of course depends upon where you live, and what rocks you have learned about in your unit.
In New York City, where I live, we have the Manhattan Schist, which is a meta-sedimentary rock. The rock looks shiny, because of the muscovite that is in it. It also contains quartz, garnet, biotite, and hornblende. It has a rough texture, due to differential chemical weathering of the various minerals that are in the rock. There are layers in the rock, which relate to the sedimentary processes that originally deposited the minerals. Also present are folds, dating from the rock's metamorphism under high pressure and temperature.
