Eco & Evo questions (please use your own words) 1. In an effort to measure the size of a bluegill population in a pond, you set 10 traps for bluegills. You catch and mark 40 with a tag on the tail fin and then release them. A week later you return to the pond and set 10 traps and you catch 40 more, of which 8 have a tag on the tail fin. What is the best estimate of the bluegill population in the pond? SHOW YOUR WORK! 2. You are hoping to get an estimate of the number of birch trees in a local park. You have a satellite image of the park, and plan to use quadrat sampling to estimate the number of birch trees in the park. The Park is 1000m by 1000m. Describe how you can set up your quadrat and how you would then use the data you collect to estimate the number of trees in the entire park. (Include a sample calculation). 3. Refer to the life table below. What is the mortality of individuals in the age 4 class? Use 2 decimal points in your answer. 4. If a population composed of 100 individuals is growing exponentially with a per capita growth rate (r) of 0.12, how many individuals will be in the population during the next time period? 5. How are aposematism and mimicry related? Make sure to define both terms in your answer.

1. In an effort to measure the size of a bluegill population in a pond, you set 10 traps for
bluegills. You catch and mark 40 with a tag on the tail fin and then release them. A
week later you return to the pond and set 10 traps and you catch 40 more, of which 8
have a tag on the tail fin. What is the best estimate of the bluegill population in the
pond? SHOW YOUR WORK!
8 of the 40 bluegill are re-trapped meaning only 20% is re-trapped.
From the initial catch, we had 40 of them thus this is the representation of the 20%
Thus; 40=20%, what of the 100%
100*40/20= 200
The best estimate of bluegill in the pond is 200

2. You are hoping to get an estimate of the number of birch trees in a local park. You have
a satellite image of the park, and plan to use quadrat sampling to estimate the number
of birch trees in the park. The Park is 1000m by 1000m. Describe how you can set up
your quadrat and how you would then use the data you collect to estimate the number
of trees in the entire park. (Include a sample calculation).
Step 1 - Calculate the mean number of birch trees per quadrat.
Mean = 40 + 50 + 20 +1 0 + 10 + 50 + 30 + 20 + 50 + 30 = 310/10 is 31 birch trees per
quadrat.
