I derive my answer from the ancient greek temples. They meant to serve as a house for a specific god or goddess.
In the modern religious setting, the places of worship serve not as the residence of God or the gods and goddesses, but rather as a central place where worshipers meet during specific times for th purposes of praying to the one they worship.
Such places of worship are important to the society because of the strong power we believe the one(s) we worship yield over our health, finances, success and even the after life. As such, no one woould want to do anything disrespectfull in such places.
