Second Great Awakening
The second Awakening had a significant impact on American society. It made American
society more open and horizontal but less vertical. It was a mass religious revival that occurred
from the bottom up to eradicate the hierarchical structure. The ordinary people initiated the
movement, but the social elite looked down on participants of the Great Awakening by naming
them religious fanatics. Regardless of the immense challenges, the Second Great Awakening had
more far-reaching political and social consequences to the American Society. The awakening
reforms shaped the political and social reforms such as women suffrage, Anti-slavery
movements, which changed American attitudes towards the future of America.
The Second Great Awakening sought to awaken the conscience on temperaments on the
rights of women. Women comprised the converts and participants in the social movements and
played significant players in their development and focus. According to Klepp (2015), the
Awakening inspired Americans to engage in efforts that uplift the morals and sense of
community and Egalitarianism among the Americans. The effects of the Awakening led to the
establishment of women's rights movements, which moved women labor for their rights instead
of being moved to labor for the Lord. This led to the obtainment of a constitutional amendment
that conferred women with the right to vote. Further, the conversions allowed women to structure
identities and form communities in an era of personal and economic insecurity and to assert
themselves in the blight of male disapproval. To that effect, women held public roles and
religious leadership positions, which were additional roles from those played in the domestic
sphere (upbringing children) (Klepp, 2015).
The Second Great Awakening fostered further effects on slavery resulting in anti-slavery
movements. The Awakening fostered a revival mentality, which presented all human beings as
