According to Carroll and Shabana (2010), Corporate social responsibility refers to the self-regulatory mechanism in which business organizations monitors their activities to ensure effective compliance with the state laws, ethical standards as well as other international norms. In other words, CSR is the business’s obligation to its primary stakeholders, which represents groups of people that have a stake in the parties that have an interest within an organization. This paper seeks to present a critical analysis of the MBPS oil company about the four areas Carroll’s Social responsibility pyramid. Notably, the paper will first briefly describe Carroll’s Social responsibility Pyramid. The paper will then discuss how the MBPS oil company has achieved the four areas. And …….. ……. ………. ……… The Carroll’s Social Responsibility Dr. Archie B. Carroll identified four critical areas of Corporate Social Responsibility. The four sectors that make up the corporate social responsibility encompass legal, ethical, economic and philanthropic factors (Carroll and Shabana, 2010). Legal responsibilities as far as CSR is concerned ensuring that business organizations adhere to the rules and regulations of a country it is operating. Notably, obeying the laws of a state helps protect the consumers who rely on a particular product that the company sells. Following such rules prevents avoidable penalties that may affect business operations. Schwartz and Carroll ( 2003) explains economic responsibilities of an organization as far as a company is concerned the company’s economic responsibility to be profitable to the 4 company’s stakeholders by providing a return on investment to the shareholders or owners of the company. Economic responsibilities also encompass creating jobs for the surrounding communities as well as produce useful products and services to the communities. Finally, being economically responsible involves streamlining processes and activities in the most efficient manner through innovation so as to increase revenue. Beyond abiding by the law, an organization has an ethical obligation to the society. Moral responsibility encompasses doing what is right to the community even if the business is not compelled by the law to do so. Ethical responsibilities include managing wastes efficiently, recycling wastes as well as providing ethical responsibilities to the society. Philanthropic responsibilities include promoting the welfare of humans and spreading goodwill( Schwartz and Carroll,2003). Notably, philanthropic responsibility compel organizations to contribute towards social, educational, recreational and cultural development. Legal Adhering to mining laws In ensuring business continuity, the MB Petroleum Services Company ensures that its activities lie in line with the mining legislation act particularly the Royal Decree laws. Obtaining Mining licenses. The MBPS Company acquires all legal permits required during operations. Particularly, the company receives appropriate licenses before providing oil and gas drilling services, before conducting nitrogen pumping operations as well as other oil and gas services such as mud logging. 5 In particular, the company obtains the initial exploration license before commencing its oil and gas exploration operations. Notably, the license permits the company to explore essential minerals within a specified geographical area for a period, usually one year. After, one year the law requires the company to renew the license to continue its operations. The MBPS often renews its licenses periodically to avoid potential conflicts with the law. The Company also obtains appropriate mining permits prior undertaking any mining operation. Noteworthy to mention, the licenses encompasses both quarry and mine operation licenses which essentially allows the exploration and mining of minerals and rocks within a specified geographical area. Besides, the company also renew the mining licenses to avoid conflicts with the law. Paying relevant fees, taxes, and tax incentives The Oman law requires firms to pay appropriate fees, taxes, royalties and tax incentives to the government. Notably, the MBPS Company pays all relevant fees required by the law. Such fees include import duties, royalties (5% of the sale of all minerals and rocks), rental fees as well as permit fees. Protection of the Environment The Omani law requires that all Companies take into consideration their activities and how they impact the environment. Notably, the Law ensures minimal destruction of the environment by issuing proper permits to companies. Such permits protect Oman’s water resources as well as an archeological heritage from destruction by businesses’ activities, particularly the petroleum companies. 6 Health and Safety Various laws in Oman enhances the health and Safety of the workers. It is noteworthy to mention that no particular law governs the health and safety of the Petroleum industry in Oman, the Oman constitution requires that some legislative acts should be observed during petroleum mining operations. The first legislation that oversees the health and safety of employees is the Oil and Gas law. Notably, the law necessitates that the right-holder should ensure that the health, security and the safety of the employees are maintained thoroughly during operations. The MBPS ensures compliance with the law by providing the workers with health and Safety equipment, putting in place and Comprehensive Security Plan. The Company also adheres to all labor laws established by the constitution such as employee overtime and working hours. Economic Provides investment and Tax Revenue The Oil and gas industry is the Oman’s largest investment sector generating significant revenue for the country. Noteworthy to mention, the oil industry contributes to government revenue through corporate taxes, property taxes, royalties, land sales as well as personal income taxes. By providing such revenues, the government has been able to create a world class infrastructure, provide social services to the local citizens as well as implement other important programs within the country (Al-Khater and Naser, 2003). Creates Jobs for the Locals The company contributes towards job creation within Oman. Important to mention, the company has recently adopted the Omanization program approved by the Omani government. Noteworthy to mention, the program aims at replacing expatriates obtained from foreign 7 countries with Omani trained personnel. Besides, the program is intended to ensure that majority of the departments and organizations in Oman employ the local human resources. In this sense, the company has focused on employing local human resources after providing relevant training to them. In addition, the organization offers training services such as workshops and internships to the local communities to enhance their on-job training skills so as to make them employable. Interesting to say, the company also offers a leadership training to communities so as to improve their leadership skills, behavioral skills as well as business skills to ensure that they contribute to the overall success of the company. Providing a return on investment for the stakeholders The MBPS contributes to revenue generation of its primary stakeholder. Important to mention, the primary stakeholder for the company is the MB holding company, which was established to develop and explore mining services in Oman and Internationally. The MBPS has contributed not only in oil exploration in Oman but also in the exploration and development of copper and gold in the Sultanate of Oman. Overall, the activities carried out by the MBPS has contributed to the overall profitability of the MB holding company. Accounting Standard Boards Regulation MBPS Oil Company also conforms to the Accounting Standard Boards regulations .In that, the company is transparent. Similarly, the company provides a complete financial statement with no error. Similarly, the financial statement of the company always gives the true financial picture of the enterprise. Waste maintenance Even though the company releases the required amount of Sulphur dioxide, it participates in oil spills thus neglecting environment (Hans and Bariki, 2012).As a result, the indigenous people's livelihood has been destroyed. The fertile agricultural lands have been destroyed .Similarly, oil spills have led to the displacement of people of Oman since their lands are inhabitable. 10 Philanthropic Responsibilities Promotes health MBPS Oil Company has made a positive impact on the Oman community. Also, the company is in partnership with health and human service. The primary goal of the partnership is to educate all our employees as well as the community about the leading cause of death in Oman (Frankental, 2001). Corporate social responsibility. The education focuses on diseases such as HIV-AIDS, heart disease as well as cancer. The company raises funds to fight the diseases. Noteworthy; the company offers a broad range of corporate activities. Introduction
It is evidence that a good start should mark a marvelous end. In line with this fact, it is my
humble honor to report that my internship at MB Petroleum Service in Muscat, Oman. The
internship was not only a success to me but also too many others that we were there together.
Apart from having a very memorable time my stay there was very educative. I moved out a
better person full of information and experience at hand. During my internship, I learned about
four very important pillars that make every business successful. Without which any serious
business will not flourish. The four pillars put together form a very important pyramid in
business called ‘The Pyramid of Corporate Social responsibility’. All the successful companies
in the world look upon this pyramid for their day to day activities. Just like the other companies
all over the world the host of my internship too observed this pyramid to the latter.
According to the pyramid, each and every company should be a good corporate citizen. The
communities that surround company should at all times benefit from the existence of the
corporate near their vicinity. Being a good corporate citizen means giving priorities to the people
that reside around the business area of the company. Whenever employment activities avail
themselves, the first beneficiaries should be the local community provided they meet the required
qualifications. It should be noted that the local community could extensionally mean the citizens
of the affected nation. For an instant, during my stay at MB Petroleum service in Muscat, I noted
that seventy-five percent of its employees is Oman citizens. Out of the seventy-five percent,
almost half the population originates from the surrounding communities. Employment has really
affected that surrounding area positively. I was more that surprised to learn that some positions
were even reserved specifically for the citizens of Oman.

In addition to the provision of employment, the company has changed the outlook of the
surrounding area positively. With the research, I made during my working in the company I
found out that before the construction of the company only five per cent of the total population
was connected to electricity. It was believed that such commodities as electricity and clean piped
water were only meant for the few rich men and women in the community. I can now prove for a
fact out of my research that almost each and every household surrounding the company is
connected to the grid power. It is a great improvement to both the community and the country at
large. In the same line of development, infrastructure has really improved. Most roads that lead
to the company are now passable after the company’s involvement to tarmac the roads. The
primary reason for improving the state of the roads by the company was to improve transport of
the products produced. However, in the process the community at large benefited.
Shareholders rights are also covered under the wing of good corporate citizenship. All the
shareholders are required to be treated with great respect by the company. It is the obligation of
the company to ensure that all its shareholders are given what is rightfully theirs whenever it is
right to do so. As I went about my internship in Muscat Oman, I noted that all the shareholders
were treated with great respect. There was a well-structured way of offering complain in case a
shareholder feels mistreated. A very slight mistake or negligence by ban employee of the
company to their shareholder could land the employee into great trouble. It is then that I learned
that one needs to be as perfect as possible in everything one does.
I did not know that being a good corporate citizen was a global slogan until I visited Dubai. I
went to MB Petroleum Services Company in Dubai to benchmark. I was taken aback when I
realized that almost everything that the company I was in Oman had actually been replicated in
Dubai. Some of the facilities were even better than the ones in Oman. In Dubai, I saw one of the

best performing schools in the country owned by petroleum and petroleum product related
company. People who observe ethics and treat everyone as they ought to be treated prosper in
their leadership. On the other hand, ego and miss treatment of others only result in destruction
and lack of prosperity. The moral lesson here is that for a company to be successful ethics should
be observed as it should be.

Companies all over the world should be very ethical to all the activities it’s engaged in. Being
ethical is very wide and affects so many people that thought too. I believe each company has its
own structures of command. Ethics require that everyone should be respected the way he or she
is despite the position one holds. Most companies have the Chief Executive Officers (CEO) as
their top most employees in command. The CEO has more and more juniors after him or her.
According to the ethics, the chain of command should be followed very well with maximum
respect.
During my internship, I learned so much through observation on matters ethics. The Chief
Executive Officer of the company was more of a servant than a leader to his junior. He executed
his duty very professionally. Many are the time I met him in the company cafeteria sharing food
with his juniors. More than enough times I have seen the CEO call the lowest conceded worker
of the company not for punishment as many would expect but for idea exchange. His good
conduct on his lower leveled co-workers motivated the juniors to work their level best.
On the contrary, there used to be a worker who was in charge of a certain department who was
very unethical. She could address the people she led with ego and mischief. She used distribute
works according to the level of relationship that one had with her. She was very selective about

her work. Providing light work to the people she knew and heavy work those she considered her
haters. Her attitude towards other members she felt junior to her made everyone not to want to be
associated with her at all. However, with time her position was replaced by one of th...
