Description

It is no secret that our nation and our public conversation about LGBT matters has changed in the last, not only 100 years, but more drastically in the last 20 years. This latest generation of kids (Millennials) have grown up in the most accepting and diverse American culture to date with respect to LGBT individuals, their families, and the issues they stand for.

This week we watched the dramatized version of The Laramie Project. A play that was written to expose and relay the stories and horrific events of that day that happened to Mathew Shepard. As mentioned before, this is a play that is performed all over the United States. This play, like so many other plays that deal with LGBT themes and issues have been coming more and more to the fray of our national and public conversation. We have seen the rise of gay and lesbian characters in all of our entertainment including TV, film, and of course the Theatre. We see how the last 20 years of LGBT pointed entertainment has shaped the political discourse of our nations power brokers. We are changing laws and shaping society to a far greater degree in even the last 5 years so as to tackle the discrimination against this particular group. Gay marriages are now legal all over the states and those that would decry the LGBT lifestyle as something to be covered or shunned for cultural or religious reasons are now beginning to be seen as radical and out of touch where just 10-15 years ago those same voices held the majority of political power in our nation. How far we have come from even prop 8 in California that would have legalized same sex marriage in the state but was soundly struck down in 2008. If that prop was up for vote today it would win resoundingly.

The waves of change are boundless and can be seen almost daily as we here more reports of judges, states, and the federal government ending discrimination all over the nation. Remember that a historic ruling from the US Supreme court, you can be gay and allowed to marry who you love and with who makes you happy in all 50 states.

Here is the question(s) I have......

In light of the play you have now watched, the articles you have read, your research and your own general awareness and knowledge of the state of our national discourse with respect to LGBT issues:

Do you feel that it has been a positive 15 to 20 years for Gay and Lesbian issues, their families and the way we feel about them?

Do you feel that we have moved in a positive way as a nation since the Mathew Shepard event in 1998? Why or why not?

How and why do you believe we have changed so quickly in our society toward the LGBT community?

Have you seen any change in your own life with how you feel or behave toward Gay and Lesbian individuals?

Would you watch a play or view a film or television that highlights LGBT themes and values? Why or why not?

make 1 paragraph responses for Kim:

Do you feel that it has been a positive 15 to 20 years for Gay and Lesbian issues, their families and the way we feel about them?

Yes, I do feel like it has been a positive 15 to 20 years for Gay and Lesbian issues with their families and how we feel about them. However, I do feel like there has been some negative issues as well. It wasn't an easy fight for them but with their dedication and open mindedness they achieved what they did today. Today, as our nation comes together, we accept diversity and in a perfect world we see everyone as equal and respect their decisions. Families have suffered for many years and had to deal with so much hate towards them.

Do you feel that we have moved in a positive way as a nation since the Mathew Shepard event in 1998? Why or why not?

Yes, ever since the Matthew Shepard event in 1998, the nation finally saw what the LGBT community was going through. The LGBT community only wanted to be accepted and all they received was hate and discrimination. Matthew's incident was so brutal and unforgiving, everybody saw that it wasn't right and Matthew did not deserve what happened to him. Even in the film, it showed people gathering together and marching together as a nation for Matthew. Even when the people screamed that "they should burn in hell," people who supported Matthew stood tall and wore angel-like wings to block them.

How and why do you believe we have changed so quickly in our society toward the LGBT community?

I believe society changed so quickly toward the LGBT community because of education and media. I believe if we teach younger people to teach them of diversity and understanding of sexual orientation, we would become a better nation. I also feel like media is important as well because all the news we see is either on the news or social media such as Facebook. We have become more aware of the LGBT community and more accepted as we see more of LGBT in movies, plays, TV, etc.

Have you seen any change in your own life with how you feel or behave toward Gay and Lesbian individuals?

I was never against Gay and Lesbian individuals and wasn't aware of what was going on in this world. However, I do feel more educated as I grow older and continue with my education. Classes like this cultural theater class makes me realize that not everyone has it easy. Whatever were going through, someone might be going through something much worse. So, I do believe it changed my perspective of the world and no one should ever feel hated for who they are. We are strongest when we all work together, why try to work alone and separate people. Hate is a waste of time.

Would you watch a play or view a film or television that highlights LGBT themes and values? Why or why not?

Yes, because I think its important we all watch a play, film, or television that highlights LGBT themes and values. From what we went through as a country we need to educate ourselves on whats out there and what people go through. Show the world what the LGBT community had to go through and how strong they become as a community.

Response 1 paragraph to Alex:

Do you feel that it has been a positive 15 to 20 years for Gay and Lesbian issues, their families and the way we feel about them?

I feel like it has been a very positive 15 to 20 years for gay and lesbian issues because today a majority of the US population is aware that the rights of people no matter who they are protected by the law and by others who encourage diversity.

Do you feel that we have moved in a positive way as a nation since the Mathew Shepard event in 1998? Why or why not?

I feel that our nation has moved in a positive way since the Mathew Shepard event because it brought awareness to the whole nation of the issues that gay and lesbians face every day. I believe the event made the nation realise that gay and lesbians are targeted for their sexual orientation and can even face death from strangers. Today we see many students like Mathew Shepard around the country who are open about their sexual orientation and there are many other people who respect the sexual orientation of others.

How and why do you believe we have changed so quickly in our society toward the LGBT community?

I believe our society has changed so quickly toward the LGBT community because of television and movies that have accelerated the understanding of the sexual orientation of others. In todays TV shows and movies there are many open LGBT actors and also actors that portray LGBT people. I believe the shows and movies allow the viewers to put themselves in the shoes of LGBT and realise that there is no difference but more importantly it helps the LGBT fit in with everyone on screen and in real life.

Have you seen any change in your own life with how you feel or behave toward Gay and Lesbian individuals?

I feel like I have seen some change in my life although I have not had anything against gay and lesbian individuals I believe the media like the shows and movies we watch have taught me what it is to feel like a targeted person and their struggles that they have had historically.

Would you watch a play or view a film or television that highlights LGBT themes and values? Why or why not?

I don't see why I would not. I am a movie fan and I appreciate all the different types of movies out there and their significant values that they teach society. I think It is important for everyone to watch a play or film on this issue because film and tv have in the past taught us of other important civil issues.

LGBT Evolutionary Transitions
I do feel that there has been a positively reinforcing sociological ideology over the last 15
to 20 years where Gay and Lesbian issues, their families and the way we feel about them because
the socialized subject matter is transitioning into a social norm rather than a matter which is
rationalized individually and culturally accepted. Over the last two decades, society has
reluctantly accepted the LGBT community, and although highly publicized tragic incidences
such as that with Matthew Shepard’s event only displays the ignorance of culturally different
perspectives, motivational movements become politically driven and solidify reinforcing
legislative enactments. I think society changes because of social norms eventually become
acceptable characteristics within society and because of the politically driven human rights issue
associated with LGBT discrimination continuously promotes and fostered legislative enactment...
