policing era and how the effect of science and technology had an impact on the world as it
applies to policing.
Policing can be categorized into clear distinct eras ; the policing era, the professional era and the
community oriented era which is the system operating till current times (Foster,2000). Each era
is associated with relative advances in technology which are further discussed in the paper.
Political era (1840-1920s)
Technology and invention were not at their best during this period. Named in connection to the
political bonds that were associated between the political class and the law enforcement
regulations and some of the technological milestones observed during this era include invention
of the telephone, the telegraph, police call boxes and a Bertillon system that was used for
identifying criminals and early forms of fingerprinting systems.in the course of this era the police
also got equipped with guns and nightsticks. A very close relationship between the police and the
