Early and current management theorists are useful to the management fraternity. The
early management theorists built the founding principles of management since they had no
numerous resources on the topic. The current theorists have improved the ideas of the early
management experts. Both play an important role as they have enhanced the knowledge of
organizations regarding management. The theorists’ works are interrelated and share important
insights that management students and organizations greatly benefit from.
Mary Parker Follett is an early management philosopher whose ideas have greatly shaped
the current management. She is the pioneer of the organizational theory who upholds the
principles that, the best way to resolve conflicts is through integration. She also believes that
genuine power is not “power with and not “power over” (Dininni, 2017). Henri Fayol is another
early management thinker. He developed 14 principles of management which are taught in
management schools across the world.
Max Weber offered great ideas regarding power and authority. According to him,
bureaucracy is responsible for the successes of large organizations. Frederick Taylor proposed
scientific methods of management. He believed that, “work could be studied scientifically and
through the application of scientific method, productivity could be enhanced” (McMillan, 2004,
pp. 47). Before his proposal, employees performed below their capacity. Some believed that
when they perform better, they will not have to work in future. The employees took years to
