Thesis statement: The hospitality industry has experienced a general shift in the past few
decades, as more clients and hotel industry managers are turning their focus to the importance of
environmental sustainability in the sector. Accommodation services in the hospitality industry
account for nearly 10% of the global greenhouse gas emissions, one of the largest contributions
to climate change apart from manufacturing and transport. This contribution is set to increase
with further expansion and development of the hospitality sector. There is increased awareness
and sensitivity to the growing environmental impact of accommodation services in hospitality,
particularly water & energy consumption, the use of recyclable & durable consumer goods, and
effective waste management. The clientele population in the hospitality industry is becoming
increasingly conscious of a hotel’s sustainability practices. A growing trend in the hospitality
industry is prioritizing hotels and other accommodation establishments in the hotel industry that
showcase an acceptable level of environmental sustainability and increased pressure from
government authorities to implement sustainable approaches among hotel industry players
(Moliner et al.). Sustainability is a hot topic in the hotel industry because the governing mix of
outside and inside forces compelling many industry players to implement sustainable practices.
