Introduction
Safeguarding one's well-being is critical to the enjoyment of life and fulfillment of one's
responsibilities in different dimensions. However, good health is seldom guaranteed because
human beings face numerous vagaries that threaten their well-being daily. While immense
advancements have been made to address the different types of illnesses that affect people
physically, the more significant challenge is fully resolving health issues within the
psychological realm. Stress disorders are some of the most common psychological problems that
affect people (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). These are psychological issues that arise
whenever individuals encounter adverse events or occurrences that exceed their capabilities to
cope with that reality. The struggle to reconcile with those events culminates in the emergence of
serious psychological issues that may hinder one’s performance of routine activities. This paper
discusses the existing research on anxiety disorder, conceptualizes it, and then probes the most
effective treatments and interventions for the disorder.
Peer-Reviewed Research Studies on Anxiety Disorders
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
The article begins with a disclaimer by asserting that while generalized anxiety disorder
is a common condition, it is subject to gross instances of underdiagnoses and under treatment
(DeMartini et al., 2019). It reveals that a lot remains to be done to ensure that the condition
receives the attention it deserves considering the massive impact on people's lives. The
researchers observe that primary care physicians tend to be the practitioners responsible for
diagnosing and treating anxiety disorders. This article delves into some common symptoms of
generalized anxiety disorders with chronic worry and the state of being overwhelmed. It also

notes that these main symptoms often manifest with other no-specific symptoms like fatigue,
restlessness, irritability, and tense muscles.
The History of Generalized Anxiety Disorder As a Diagnostic Category
The article provides vital insights into how modern psychiatry developed and gradually
accepted generalized anxiety disorders as a diagnostic category (Crocq, 2017). According to the
authors, healthcare practitioners in the 18th century perceived generalized anxiety disorder as a
recurrent condition that manifested as a constant state of worry about general facets of life. These
early psychiatry practitioners tended to consider panic and anxiety as the same type of disease.
The term pantophobic referred to a state in which the patient under examination feared even the
most basic activities. According to the researchers, Sigmund Freud coined the term anxiety
neurosis to describe a state of affairs where the individual developed anxious energy because
they could not release the sexual tension built up in their body. In the same vein, Freud attributed
anxiety to some form of expectation whereby an individual came to expect an adverse event
whenever something innocuous happened. For instance, one may anticipate a terrible situation
when the individual in question is only differing from a mild cold.
DSM-I was the first publication that seemed to recognize anxiety as a general medical
condition. It utilized the phrase psychoneurotic disorders to describe the feeling derived from a
real or perceived threat. Adolf Meyer extended the concept of reactions and asserted that there
were patterns behind the experiences of individuals that fell within the ambit of anxiety. For
instance, anxiety reactions referred to a state of affairs where anxiety was spread across multiple
