Implications for Social Change Tourism plays a huge role in influencing social transformation in host communities in terms of alternation in behaviour patterns and cultural activity (McGehee, 2004). During decision making for tourism management, it is necessary to consider the perception of the receiving community in order to ensure tourism development is sustainable. The implications for social change are both positive and negative (Prosser, 1998). Some of the negative implications such as increased sexually transmitted disease, insecurity and poor sanitation result from illegal prostitution, increasing crimes, crowding, social conflict and drug abuse and trafficking (Prosser, 1998). The social positive implications are observed through the improvement of leisure recreation, support and acceptance of cultural activities, fostering faith and community attachment and increased education of the people (Richards & Hall, 2000). Faith and community attachment is seen when people in the destination get together and share their faith and respect through serving the guests. This connectivity due to tourism has encouraged global human value and facilitated the conservation of culture and art (Picard & Robinson, 2006). Increased cultural acceptance and support has enhanced awareness through interaction encouraging respect for local traditions. The richness of the host destination should be maintained through preservation of the local traditions in order to ensure sustainable development of tourism (Richards & Hall, 2000). Improvement of leisure recreation has led to the generation of employment through different sectors including hotels, transport and boating services. Education of the people has led to the general respect of culture by the guest and it has encouraged investment towards a growing economy of the destination through infrastructure improvement and provision of service to the community (McGehee, 2004). In conclusion, it is important to appreciate the positive social transformation that has resulted from the tourism industry. Change is inevitable when it comes to sustaining tourism development because tourism itself is a change factor (Richards & Hall, 2000). Social change has been appreciated at individual, community, organisation, culture and society level (Picard & Robinson, 2006). The positive implications include; appreciation of cultural values, economic growth, education, community attachment and awareness of local traditions in the destination. ...
