10V DeRoma 2 Write about 900 words. Use letter-sized paper and MLA 2016 formatting. See also the “Submitting Drafts” and “Formatting Worksheet" handouts for specific instructions. Do not forget to include a properly formatted Works Cited section. Grading Criteria Here is what I will be looking for when grading your essay. Understanding and use of the texts – You use the required texts to discuss your main point or issue, showing good understanding of the authors' ideas. Ideally, you have at least one quote per paragraph and you explain and discuss these quotes well. (25 points) Relationship between ideas – Your reader can clearly tell which ideas are yours and which come from the texts. You draw connections between all these ideas. (25 points) Organization - Your introduction contains a well stated main point or issue that is consistently addressed throughout your text. Each of your paragraphs discusses a specific aspect of that main point or issue and have topic sentences that show that to your reader. There is a conclusion that does not add new information. (20 points) Language - In spite of a few slips in grammar, vocabulary, and use, your text flows well and is easy to understand even to native speakers not used to reading the work of second- language writers. (10 points) Citations - You used appropriate in-text citations, all of which are fully documented in your properly formatted Works Cited section. (10 points) Formatting - Your text follows all the required formatting guidelines of this prompt, including the number of words. (10 points) Deadline and submission This draft is due by the end of the day on Friday, March 24th. Submit it on HuskyCT. ENG1003 - Spring 2017 C. L. Z. DeRoma Essay 3 - First Draft Texts: Required: Walker's “English Mania” Traves' “The Church of Please and Thank You" Recommended: Baron's "Who Owns Global English” MacNeil's “English Belongs to Everybody" Tan's "Mother Tongue" Background In the first cycle, we dealt with the question of the role of language in the lives of people living in a foreign country. In your essay, you had to show a good understanding of Tan's ideas in her text and how it related to your main points and examples. A key point in Cycle 1 was to try go beyond just reporting on Tan's text and do more than just providing examples that could “prove” your point. One of the challenges was to actually discuss what her view on the issue was and how that view related to yours. In the second cycle, we explored connections between the ideas of Tan, MacNeil, and Baron in relation to people's reactions to different Englishes. You were encouraged not to use your own examples to practice using the texts as much as possible. In this third cycle, we have been investigating why English has become the most studied second language in the world. We looked at the different views of Traves and Walker. Prompt for the first draft The central questions guiding Cycle 3 are “Why do people study English?” and “Why English?”. In this cycle, you will think through how the two different authors address this question and what YOUR view is. People need English to be able to communicate with others around the world and get better jobs (maybe through education in English). These are well-known facts that many people have argued for over and over. If that is all your essay says, it will not be very strong. Also, from a linguistic point of view, English as a whole is not more or less complex than any other language, so arguing that English is easier to learn is not a very strong argument because it is hard to demonstrate with actual facts. Here are some other ideas you can consider: What's the role of English-speaking (or Anglophone) countries in the spread of English? What is the economic and cultural influence of English-speaking countries? • Why is it that you can get a better job if you speak English? Why are employers seeking workers who speak English? Feel free to use the texts we used in previous cycles. For example, you can use Baron to discuss people's reactions to the spread of English.
