Sociological theories are applied by researches in order to be able to focus more on
structural and broader issues. In this context, more focus is given to the situations, social
structures as well as relations in which the individual is in rather than the individual. As such, in
the context of drug use in the United States as it is today, the conflict theory can be used to
explain the use of drugs. Proponents of the theory conclude that there is a strong relation
between the heavy abuse of drugs and ones social class, power, location and income (West &
Brown, 2013). Notably, there is a significant number of persons that come from low-income
households who end up engaging in drug abuse. The numbers of people from affluent
households do not engage in the vice as much.
Conclusively, the conflict theory serves as a good explanation to the current state of the
United States as far as drug abuse is concerned. Notably, there has always been a connection
