The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
This is the basis for project planning and management. It WBS is the linking point for
work and cost estimates, schedule information, actual effort or cost expenditures, and the
accountability. It must always exist before the project manager will be able to measure or
determine the progress and variance from the set plan. For any project manager to perform
this critical function, the Work Breakdown Structure is at its core a hierarchy of deliverables
or tangible results. In project management, Work Breakdown Structure is a methodology for
getting a difficult, multi-step project competed. The WBS can be used to divide and control
large projects so one can get activities done faster and in a more efficient manner (Norman,
Brotherton, & Fried, 2008).
