Article Overview
Due to increase in minimum wages by the states, many restaurants have begun to
introduce labor surcharges with an aim of maintaining the increasing wage bill as well as to
protect the customer’s loyalty. The introduction of surcharges by most of the restaurants has
brought about a lot of controversy on whether the move will violate the rights of the
customers or in favor of many restaurants. This is a very controversial issue that has everyone
talking. Most of the proponents of surcharges argue that the surcharges will help them to
generate more money to finance their operations cost. On the customer’s perspective, the
move is intended to reduce the negative perceptions. According to Wall street journal article
by Jargon (2017), titled New on Your Dinner Tab: A Labor Surcharge it shows that there is a
good side and bad side for the surcharge strategy.
Good side of the Surcharge strategy
From a business perspective, the surcharges enable the restaurants to shift the
additional cost to the customers instead of bearing the cost. Customers will now have to dig
even deeper into their pockets in order to afford the meals they used to enjoy. The quality and
quantity will not change but the prices will go up. if the restaurants do not so this, their profits
will be reduced because a part of it will be used to cater for the increased labor costs. since no
