Nurse-to-patient ratios have recently been on top of the list on medical community
debates. Many medical communities have had the argument about interventions of the
government in minimum staffing laws. As we speak, the only state with such a law enacted is
California. The rest of the states are having their nurse unions fight for the same to be
implemented in their places of work as well. Kaiser Health News (2013) states that similar nurse
staffing laws have backfired in every state where they were proposed ever since the
implementation of the law in California. This is as a result of failure of hospitals participation.
The argument hospitals have about such laws is that it gives them an inability in making
decisions relating to staffing thus being a major financial burden.
Nursing unions are of the idea that hospitals employ few nurses while the patients they
have are too many. A shortage in nurses always results to stress, job burnouts and endangering
patients. The president of the Michigan Nurses Association argued that these days’ hospitals are
managed in the same way as businesses and they are always aimed at the short term bottom-line.
